No More Diets, Issue #066 - Accidental Weight Loss
December 6th, 2006

Hi

Lots of rainy, windy weather here in Edinburgh but it is the warmest autumn on record apparently. I think warm is a relative term as winter coats and hats are still very much required though we have had no snow yet!

If it's winter where you are and you feel like eating for comfort, just remember that cold weather is just right for lots of great soups, stews and spicy foods and you don't have to eat junk foods which pile on the pounds.

Have a great week

Love

Feature article : Accidental Weight Loss

When you want to achieve ANY goal it's good to focus on what you want to do and really go for it.

But sometimes the idea of weight loss is just not enough to keep us motivated through the long commitment required of eating less and moving more.

So you have to look at what would motivate you enough and it can help to take the focus off your weight - which is really just a figure on  a scale - and move it onto what you are ultimately trying to achieve.

Maybe a "bursting with health" program would make you feel more inclined to want to change your habits? to drink more water? to eat better? to keep yourself in tip-top condition?

Or how about a campaign to look drop-dead gorgeous by feeding your body the right foods and micro-nutrients, looking after your skin, hair and nails, sculpting your body millimetre by millimetre with the right exercise?

Or even a goal to run a 10k race every month next year?

And the thing with these goals is that weight loss becomes a by-product of achieving something much bigger and more valuable for yourself. You're taking the focus off scales and calories and putting it on caring for yourself, eating the right energy and life-enhancing foods and/or on getting the fittest you've ever been.

So not only do you become slimmer, you end up with a whole heap of life-enhancing changes most of which you won't know until you experience them. (Things like better confidence and self-esteem, sleeping better, getting fewer colds and other infections).

It may be worth thinking about as you set your resolutions in 2007 to lose weight for the umpteenth time. Is that really all you want?

Recipe of the Week: Mighty Burgers

When you feel like a burger, don't head out for the nearest fast food place and fill yourself with junk. Make your own for true taste explosion. Serve with salad and half a toasted roll.

Serves 2

175 Calories per Serving for chicken
260 Calories per Serving for beef

  • 225g (8oz) ground (minced) lean beef steak or chicken

  • olive oil spray
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 25g (1oz) fresh breadcrumbs

Spray a pan with oil and gently fry the vegetables until soft. Mix with the remaining ingredients in a bowl. Form into two burger shapes. Grill or broil for a few minutes on each side until cooked through.
