No More Diets, Issue #083 - Do You Have Stealth Fat?

May 4th, 2007

Hi

I'm back running this week but taking it more gently (if there is such a thing) after a week off with my "injury". I'm just doing about 20 minutes at a time to see if my ankle holds up.

I'd still like to make the 5K charity event on 3rd June so here's hoping...

Just demonstrates the difference between health and fitness - the fittest athletes always seem to have some injury or other. It's seems the healthiest thing is just to walk briskly...

Hope you're having a good week

Love

Feature article : Do You Have Stealth Fat?

So many calories slip down our throats and add to our fat stores when we're not even paying attention, it's criminal!

If you saw the amount of food that passes your lips over a week all at once you might be truly shocked and horrified. But you are probably blissfully unaware of that.

It's so easy to eat without thinking that you can easily eat a day's calories before half the day is gone and not feel like you have eaten much.. .

If you do nothing else this week to help yourself lose weight at least try and become aware of all that you are eating.

Notice the bits of food you pop in your mouth as you are preparing meals. And the food you eat from the plates as you are clearing the table (I know I have been there!).

Notice the food you eat just because it's there. The food you eat standing up at the refrigerator. The samples you try as you do the shopping at the supermarket. The number of times you say "yes" to food that's offered when you weren't even hungry.

Notice the extra food you eat at meal times beyond the point where your physical hunger is satisfied. Did you really NEED that dessert? (even if that dessert is an apple it might be a tiny apple a day too many that puts 5lb of fat on your body year after year).

Sometimes, these bits of food here, bits of food there are the difference between being slim and being overweight or obese. You are left wondering why you eat so little and weigh so much. It's fat by stealth...

And don't forget the "pounds of fat" that you are probably drinking every year in the form of soda, juices and milky drinks.  Of course I don't really mean you are drinking fat (although you might very well be with the milky drinks) but you are drinking calories which turn rapidly into fat without even helping to fill you up.

And if you drink alcohol that has a double whammy of filling you out without filling you up - AND increasing your appetite for things you normally manage to say "No" to.

Make this an awareness week - until you are aware of what is going on - you can't change a thing!

Recipe of the Week: Roasted Garlic Potatoes

Surprisingly low in calories for something which tastes so good. Leave the skins on the potatoes for extra fiber.

Serves 4

138 calories a serving

4 large potatoes
4 teaspoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary leaves or half teaspoon dried (optional)

Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees Centigrade (400F/Gas Mark 6). Cut the potatoes into 2.5 cm (1") chunks and boil in salted water for 5 minutes. Drain well and return to the hot pan with the oil, garlic and rosemary (if desired). Mix well. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Turn out into a shallow baking dish so that the potatoes are in a single layer. Roast until the potatoes are tender and golden brown (this will take about 40 minutes). Enjoy!
