No More Diets, Issue #085 - How Active Are You? Or Are You Just Busy?
June 5th, 2007

Hi

I finally ran my 5K charity race at the weekend - and quite proud of myself I was too.

I had decided that I would switch from running to power walking after the race because my ankle has been quite sore at times but it was such fun that I might just have to keep up that running...

For my first ever fun run I ran along with 6000 other women around Arthur's Seat (a volcanic rock formation in the heart of Edinburgh) in aid of cancer research. All ages, shapes and sizes were taking part and some obviously in the middle of cancer treatment themselves, others with notes pinned to their T-shirt "Running for granny" "Running for my lovely partner who died last year" - all that certainly brings a sore ankle into perspective and a lump to the throat...

Unfortunately it wasn't very good for any kind of weight loss or even maintenance because we dived straight into the nearest restaurant and sank a large plate of pasta, bread and wine.....

Hope you're having a great week and keeping off the large plates of pasta...

Love

Feature article : How Active Are You? Or Are You Just Busy?

Do you think you lead a pretty active lifestyle? Are you always on the go and quite literally too busy all day for exercise and too tired in the evening -it's all you can do to throw together dinner and slump in front of the TV?

You may think that you are being busy and active but it may surprise you how little you are actually moving your body.

If you have been active rushing here, there an everywhere, chances are you have been out and about in your car. You may be worn out from getting from place to place dealing with parking and heavy traffic, picking up kids, doing errands or whatever but you have not really used your limbs much.

On the other hand you may have had a stressful day with a huge amount to think about and get sorted out. You maybe had a lot of phone calls to make, emails to deal with, a presentation to give, kids arguments to sort out and decisions to make about what to make for dinner and what to give Aunty Mary for her birthday. You may be mentally worn out with your busy day but you are not physically tired.

You see there's a difference between being busy and being active.

In fact, anything under 10,000 steps a day is pretty inactive and very few of us get those 10,000 steps we need for health - never mind the additional steps we may need to lose weight.

If you tend to be busy all day out and about or mentally busy and too tired in the evenings to do anything just try grabbing your partner or the dog one nice fine evening and going for a walk after dinner instead of deciding you feel too tired for anything. You will be amazed at how much physical energy you actually have once you start moving - and how much better you feel for it.

And every step you take will contribute to your goal to lose weight.

Recipe of the Week: Tomato and Basil Omelette

This is great for a quick lunch  - serve on a slice of wholemeal toast and with a mixed green salad.

Serves 1

255 calories

3 cherry tomatoes, quartered
a few fresh basil leaves, torn
2 eggs
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 tablespoon milk or cream

Mix the tomatoes with the basil and half the oil in a bowl. Whisk the eggs together with the milk and season with a little salt and black pepper. Heat the remaining oil in a non stick omelette pan and add the eggs. Add the tomato mixture as the eggs are starting to set and continue to cook to get the consistency of omelette you like (soft or firm). Serve immediately.
